Discussion Q 1 – Three Words to Describe Your Vision for #NewProfNZ

1. What three words would you use to describe your vision for #NewProfNZ?

It’s quite self-explanatory, isn’t it? So just pick your three words, add a sentence (or two or three!) to explain why you picked those words, and submit it as a comment. I hope to put the terms in a tag cloud and see which terms are the most commonly used. This will help shape our overarching vision for the New Professionals Network in New Zealand!

I’ll start the discussion:

1. The New Professionals’ Network will be a community – this might seem obvious at first glance, but I think it is important to state. At the moment, the new professionals are everywhere in New Zealand, but the community is fragmented. Students at Victoria University in Wellington have their own networks, Open Polytechnic students have theirs, geographic distance makes it hard to collaborate with people from other centers. Distance learning can also result in a lack of community, so my vision is that the New Professionals Network will be a community that connects all of these different factions into one.

2. The New Professionals’ Network will be evolving – new professionals groups (by their very nature) are continually being refreshed as new faces join and older members leave. In addition to this definition, I like to think that this will be a learning community – as evidenced by this start-up. We are building this network up from scratch, giving everyone a voice, and learning from other New Professionals communities around the world.

3. The New Professionals’ Network will be innovative – I think one of the strengths of new graduates or people new to this particular profession is that we see things in a different way from folk who have been in it for a long time. Fresh eyes see new possibilities and ideas, and for people coming from different backgrounds/professions, they are able to draw on their past experiences to be innovative in library contexts. I also hope this network will be flexible and fast-moving so that we can respond to rapidly changing contexts in the information profession.

So that’s my 2c – what about yours?

  1. Sally says:

Three words is tough! So I’ve listed three things instead πŸ™‚
    Think global act local
    Do something (take action)
    Be supportive

  2. mel chivers says:

Inclusive: to encourage students and recent graduates to be involved in their profession and their professional organisation. I think that any events need to benefit those who are LIANZA members (with discounted rates), but we don’t want to lock out those who have not yet signed up.

Inspiring: I want a new professionals network to get graduates excited about our industry and our future. Without my involvement with ALIA New Grads I wouldn’t have half the passion for libraries that I do.

Interaction: I believe two-way communication channels with the rest of LIANZA are vital. It’s all very well to be doing amazing things and inspiring new grads but it needs to be feeding back into the larger professional body.

    • Love, love, love, your three I’s – they sum up the situation perfectly! Important to focus on new professionals/graduates, but also to think about where we fit in wider profession and using existing networks to connect people.

Also important point to benefit LIANZA members, but not to lock out those who aren’t yet (for one reason or another). Discussing the role of the network in relation to LIANZA and where we fit will be a key component of the first skype meeting – agenda to come out soon!

  3. Tracy says:

Three suggestions: Open, transparent and free πŸ™‚

    • Great emphasis on open and free – best way to engage people πŸ™‚ It’s not so much about what you pay, but the value you bring to it. I think New Professionals Network will be a great framework to help people engage and share.

  4. Vibrant: the New Professionals Network will be a positive and fun place to exchange ideas and experiences.
Visionary: the New Professionals Network will be a place where things CAN happen, ideas can take shape, opinions are valued and discussed and a place for the new movers and shakers
Creative: the New Professionals Network will be a place to look at things differently, to innovate, to bring art, culture and simplicity to libraries! ( this is my passion)

All the other words look great!

    • Great emphasis also – love the vibrant and visionary – it sounds so exciting! It definitely will be a framework/forum to foster those ideas and take action. The creative aspect is also a nice touch – it’s important to get those creative juices flowing πŸ™‚

    • Tracy says:

I really enjoyed your 3 words. New professionals and new grads will bring some amazing ideas to the table to shift us into 21st century librarianship πŸ™‚

  5. There were also some great submissions left via twitter this morning:

  6. *Just a copy of Raewyn’s comment from the “Welcome page” -great stuff Raewyn!*

    March 1, 2013 at 1:17 PM

    Raewyn says:
    Forward – Active – Empowering

  7. Mark says:

I’m more of a practical person so I’m more into:
    – Strategic thinking
    – Engaging ideas
    – Network building
Just some ideas I want this group to be.

  8. Ngai Deckard says:

When I first sat down and thought about this. I thought about the expansion of mind and place that author Morris West touched upon in Clowns of God.
So here is my twisted way of putting out 3 words (Because I can’t count or string together a really coherent sentence).
    Explosion of space
    Expansion of mind

This is how a group like this can flourish and thrive. It starts with the ideas in the explosion of space. i.e. informing, sharing, learning etc and moves through to the expansion of mind with new ideas and leads onto activism where we are going to get out of our collective librarians seats and actually do something.

Here is the other side though.

If your mind does not expand with the explosion of space then you will go away the same person you were before.

    • Very true – and a good warning. The explosion of space is happening (and I think it has blown my mind!) but it is important for our minds to expand along with it and actually put into practice what we are talking about. Good stuff πŸ™‚

  9. I do accept as true with all the ideas you’ve presented on your post. They are very convincing and can certainly work. Nonetheless, the posts are too quick for starters. Could you please lengthen them a little from subsequent time? Thank you for the post.

    • Hi – thanks for your comment. I did purposely leave the first post shorter to encourage others to also share their ideas. Some people have just shared words (which have been shorter posts), but I hope that this discussion has helped us decide what we would like the New Professionals Network to be like. πŸ™‚

  10. My three words are rather simple (and copyrighted…sorry Nike) Just Do It…
Le’ts get on with it. Don’t try to please every single person, or get feedback from every single person. We’ll never please everybody all the time. Let’s not worry about theorising for 6 months or doing full 100% confident evaluations on everything, let’s just get on with it. It’s worth a shot to try anything once, and the more momentum we have, the more this group will be able to achieve πŸ™‚

    • Very true Christine – I think we can nut out the basics fairly fast over Twitter and Skype. Maybe the purpose of New Professionals Network is to be that forum where new ideas are suggested, explored and implemented. There is talk of a major event within the next 12 months and I’m of the opinion that the sooner, the better πŸ™‚

  11. Amy Joseph says:

    Innovative – Strategic – Supportive

And +1 to Sally’s comment that the group should “Do something (take action)”.

    • Very true – great words πŸ™‚ And definitely agree about taking action – putting out Skype agenda shortly. This group is going to take action very soon – I think we’ve done some great conceptualization of the purpose and role of this group; there is still some other issues to discuss, but I think we can move onto action quite quickly πŸ™‚
